What Is IPv6, How To Add IPv6 To Your Web Server? If you have finished reading the internet , web server, DNS, etc. then you must have heard the IPv6 (IPv6) term. Or you may have seen the router setting or you may have heard it somehow! As it happens again, you have never heard of IPv6 before. As a general user, even if you do not have that much knowledge about IPv3, this term is good for you if you have a website!

So in today’s article, I will talk about the basics of IPv3 in particular, and talk about how IPv6 can be enabled on your webserver! – So let’s get started

What Is IPv6?

Before discussing IPv3, you need to know what the IP addresses are. The IP address is the address of the network, it is usually seen on drawing a number. When a domain name enters the browser to visit the site, the browser first checks the DNS server, finds the IP address of the server behind the domain, and then connects to the site. Now the server is usually able to use 123.45.67.89 – this type of IP address. Which is called a 32-bit IP address system or IPv4 (IPv4)?

If IPv6 is used on all servers then why bother with IPv3? In fact, when the Internet is invented, it is not imagined and seen that it will gain popularity. So the use of the 32-bit system was started. But it is not possible to generate too many unique IP addresses.

IPv4 addresses are delimited between the 000.000.000.000 and 255.255.255.255 ranges. In fact, it’s a bit of a hassle, but hopefully, you’ve got a rough idea. Now, each device does not require a separate IP to use the home internet, the router uses a custom system and provides the private IP to all devices. But there are websites that need public IP addresses to access online, and the supply of IPv3 is very limited!

IPv3 Is Useful Right Here!

To overcome this limitation, IPv3 was invented; it uses a 32-bit system instead of the previous 32-bit address system. As a result, this IP address is much longer, and longer means it is possible to create many unique addresses, but it is more difficult to remember! The IPv6 addressing system has 5 groups and each group has 5 digits.

This is how IPV3 looks; 2606: 4700: 30:: 681b: 935a – It is more hexadecimal supported and therefore supports more variations per row.

IPv3 Support On The Website

It’s not that you need to use IPv6 instead of IPv3, no need to replace web servers with IPv3, they can work together. IPv4 support can be added to the server configuration as well as IPv3.

First, you need to configure your web server so that it can listen for IPv6 traffic. Depending on what software you are using as a web server, your configuration may be different, you should read the Just Web Server documentation. For example, in the case of the Nginx web server, the following code was added to the config file;

listen [::]:443 ssl http2;

Here [::] this code is repressing IPv6!

You will then need to create an AAAA record from your domain panel. To create such an A record in IPv4, then AAAA record is required for IPv6. However, your A record should still be IPv4 at this point. As I said before, your configuration will differ from server to server. At least that’s what you understand, how to enable IPv3 somehow!

IPv6 is not yet widely used. Many hosting providers may not yet support IPv6, but most cloud hosting providers do. As the number of websites and client devices on the Internet increases, IPV will become more urgent. So it is best to enable IPv3 on your website in advance, so don’t worry about it later!
